My daughter was diagnosed by a famous pediatric optometrist to have brain suppression issue, which scared us and made me really puzzled since she was showing no symptom, study is good, plays volleyball in the school team, etc. So I went to Benny for a second opinion. He did lots of different tests and concluded that there’s no major issues besides a little astigmatism, which does not need to be treated right away. So we decided to come back after the volleyball season is over. What a relief!

I have actually known Dr. Shao for over 20 years. He genuinely cares about his patients and becomes personally invested in their progress and improvement. With an initial evaluation, he will honestly tell you if vision therapy will be of benefit, and what results he expects to achieve in a given time frame. If vision therapy won’t work for your particular situation, he is very straight-forward and will let you know.
My two children have been working with Dr. Shao and both have shown progress, particularly my son whose reading speed was slow and never seemed to be able to read for long periods of time. It turns out that his eyes were not focusing correctly and this was giving him double-vision. Now that his issues have been corrected, I have noticed that he is reading at a surprisingly fast pace and can maintain reading focus easily. His GPA has risen from a 3.13 to a 3.6 in the past three months since starting vision therapy, and may continue to improve still.
I also have a nephew who had a slight prescription for near-sightedness, and after some vision therapy here was able to return to 20/20 vision – no need for glasses anymore! This kind of result apparently is easiest if you start vision therapy just as the patient is starting to need glasses.
If your child (or adult) is starting to experience vision problems, or has any of the issues listed on Dr. Shao’s website, I absolutely believe it is worth it to be evaluated. We’ve been very happy with the results.

Dr Shao was able to drop another point off my son’s prescription. Thanks to his therapy over the past several months, my son’s eyes are aligned without glasses, and he can see clearly with a significantly lower prescription. We will continue with the therapy until my son is glasses-free!
